| The Texas Instruments 4MM provides
battery pack protection for laptop computers, cellular phones, protable tools |
| and more. By protecting against
overload and limited short circuit, the 4MM can in many cases replace two device |
| thuseproviding a signfcaant total cost
of ownership advantage. |
| ¢ÂOperation¢Â |
| The 4MM uses the same snap-action
principle of other KLIXON protectors. The bi-metal disc senses both heat |
| heat and current from the battery pack
When the temperature of the disc reaches a predetermined calibration point |
| the disc snaps open the contacts,
thus breaking the current path When the battery returens to a nomal operting |
| range, the 4MM protector resets(closes
circuit) automatically. |
| ¢ÂOvercharge & Limited
Short Circuit Protection ¢Â |
| Overcharge the 4MM sense heat buildup in the battery
pack,characteristic of an overcharge condition and the |
| disc snaps open the contacts at the predetermined
calibration point the wide differential between the open and |
| cosing temperature of the disc cause the 4MM to cycle
slowly during a prolonged fault condition, this ensures |
| the average temperature fo the battery will be kept overall
life of the pack. |
| short circuit -current passes from the lead through the
current sensitive armature, during a short circuit condition, |
| the lapid increase in current will generate I2R
heating in the arm. Materials are available with varying resistances |
| shich control the current sensitivity of the device(see
table). The non current carrying bimetal disc senses this |
| theat hrough convection and snaps open the contacts thus
beraking the circut. When the
falut condition is |
| removed and current returns to a nomal level, the disc will
reset the circuit to its nomally closed position. |
